Virtually identical in content to other multifilm, multidisc Chaplin collections released circa 2003-2005, this twelve-disc set has a familiar line-up of Chaplin films from his Keystone, Essanay and Mutual periods.

Delta Entertainment issued similar collections in 3-disc, 8-disc, 10-disc and 12-disc sets. You are best advised to avoid any of these Chaplin collections from Delta/Cobra Entertainment (successor to Delta) as they contain some of the worst-looking prints available on home video. Absolutely shameful products from a shameless company.

This budget DVD collection follows the suit of other big box releases: put as few films onto as many discs as possible, irregardless of print quality and sell them as cheap as possible. With so many quality versions of the later Chaplin films available, the chief attraction of this collection will be the presence of the 1914 Keystone films. But don’t expect them to be mastered from anything but poor 16mm and 8mm reduction prints.

The films are presented with soundtracks compiled from preexisting vintage recordings.

For our comparative reviews of some of the individual films in this boxset, see our The Adventurer on home video, The Bank on home video, Between Showers on home video, Behind the Screen on home video, The Bond on home video, A Busy Day on home video, By the Sea on home video, Carmen on home video, Caught in a Cabaret on home video, The Champion on home video, The Count on home video, Cruel, Cruel Love on home video, The Cure on home video, A Day’s Pleasure on home video, Dough and Dynamite on home video, Easy Street on home video, The Face on the Bar Room Floor on home video, The Fatal Mallet on home video, A Film Johnnie on home video, The Fireman on home video, The Floorwalker on home video, Getting Acquainted on home video, His Favorite Pastime on home video, His Musical Career on home video, His New Job on home video, His New Profession on home video, The Immigrant on home video, In the Park on home video, The Kid on home video, Kid’s Auto Race on home video, The Knockout on home video, Laughing Gas on home video, Mabel’s Married Life on home video, Mabel’s Strange Predicament on home video, Making a Living on home video, The Masquerader on home video, The New Janitor on home video, His New Job on home video, A Night in the Show on home video, A Night Out on home video, One A.M. on home video, The Pawnshop on home video, Police! on home video, Recreation on home video, The Rink on home video, The Rounders on home video, Shanghaied on home video, Shoulder Arms on home video, The Star Boarder on home video, Sunnyside on home video, Tango Tangles on home video, Those Love Pangs on home video, The Tramp on home video, Triple Trouble on home video, Twenty Minutes of Love on home video, The Vagabond on home video, A Woman on home video and Work on home video pages.

As many of the source prints utilized for this collection are truly horrible, don’t consider buying this collection. The Keystone, Essanay, Mutual and First National films have all been released on DVD home video in far superior editions transferred from 35mm prints.
