All Night
(1918)

This early film for Rudolph Valentino also stars the engaging Carmel Myers.

A young couple is convinced by friends to post as a married couple to impress an eccentric millionaire who is needed as an investor in a business venture. This early Man-Who-Came-To-Dinner comedy plays well enough as light entertainment.

This film may be collectible for Valentino’s presence, but we think that All Night is a prime opportunity to watch an early performance by Carmel Myers.

Ratings (1-10): video: 3 / audio: 3 / additional content: 5 / overall: 3.

This DVD-R edition has been mastered from the only known surviving print, a good 16mm reduction print that is soft of image details and contrasty, with plugged-up shadows and featureless highlights. It does appear that brief sections of the film are missing, as some transitions between sections of scenes are abrupt. And, there is nitrate decomposition in the final minutes of the original source print that was copied to make this print.

The film is accompanied by a compilation soundtrack of vintage recordings that have been processed for mock stereo.
